Top Line - Goods productivity up
The media focuses on the headline number of aggregate labour productivity which increased but at a slower rate for goods. This is only a headline. The key issue is sectors and output. Focussing on inflation leads one to look at unit labour costs which incorporates productivity in hours terms as well as wages. Clicking on the charts provides a larger view.


The left chart shows that business goods productivity rose but manufacturing only slightly gained after several quarters of decline. Service-sector productivity has been strongly influenced by wholesale and transportation which have a weather and a demand factor.
The right hand chart compares the inflation rate to changes in unit labour costs. Given the high import content for domestic CPI, this should be interpreted with care. However, note the declines in both wholesale and retail ULC.
Our output is influenced by trading partner demand as well as domestic activity.


Institutional factors such as plant retooling and weather affect the GDP shown in the left chart. The right chart shows that hours worked have risen (blue bars - most recent quarter_ but in key sectors such as manufacturing and transportation, the gains do not wipe out the previous quarters drops.
We should remember that in annual terms, our growth has been very dependent on particular sectors. In the next chart, compare the mining y/y growth to manufacturing.


Retail and wholesale trade are only gain slightly. The business-sector services productivity aggregate is just gaining very slightly in annual terms.


The last two charts shows that business-services growth in hours hours worked exceed that in the goods sector. Broadly speaking, annual growth in unit-labour costs are remaining relatively stable.
